Hi! I'm Izzi Guzman.
Based in Miami and Orlando, FL, Izzi Guzman is a brass performer, composer, arranger, and educator with a mission to share joy, fun, and authenticity through her musical stories. She has performed for a wide variety of ensembles across the United States under many genres on trombone, trumpet, flugelhorn, and other brass instruments. Currently, Izzi performs with the Frost Jazz Orchestra under the direction of John Daversa. She will soon be embarking on her student teaching internship, teaching elementary music at Frank C. Martin International K-8 Center and elementary/middle school band at Florida Christian School.
Izzi enjoys blending her favorite genres and inspirations into her own unique style in her compositions and arrangements, which have been performed at the highly acclaimed Frost School of Music and Berklee College of Music. She is inspired by her spontaneity and personal stories when writing her music. She is regularly asked to arrange for ensembles across the Frost School of Music and Florida community. Her most recent compositional debut was with the Frost Jazz Orchestra, premiering a multi-genre work entitled “Where I’ll Go Now,” a reflection on Izzi’s mental health journey and entering a new phase of life as a student teacher and professional.
Izzi is a full-tuition scholar at the University of Miami and Berklee College of Music.
She graduated from Berklee College of Music 2 years ahead of the curriculum Summa Cum Laude in 2022 with a B.M. in Professional Music. She studied with Angel Subero and countless other faculty on trombone, arranging, songwriting, and music education. In 2021, she was featured on Peter Bell’s album “Just Sayin’” and premiered her writing at Berklee for the first time. At the University of Miami, she is in her 4th year pursuing a B.M. in Music Education and an M.M. in Jazz Pedagogy under an accelerated 5-year degree plan. She currently studies under Dante Luciani and has previously worked with Brian Lynch, Etienne Charles, Stephen Guerra, and Dafnis Prieto.
As an educator, Izzi believes that all genres should be equally valued in music education and that students should lead the process. Her original music follows this value, taking listeners through the many flavors and stories that create Izzi’s colorful musical world. Izzi’s second album, “Interdimensional,” features 10 musicians from the Frost School of Music and is a musical collection of her inspirations and stories through college.
Teaching Philosophy
Teaching music is an act of the heart over the mind. Our hearts are each driven to music in ways we may or may not realize. Some of us are drawn to performing music, some of us are drawn to writing music, and some of us are drawn to simply enjoying music. Taking the time to learn improvisation, composition, and arranging helped me develop and express my identity and culture through music, and my vision as a music educator is for my students to have the opportunity to express themselves authentically in the classroom through these tools. Guiding students toward creating music can play a key role in the development of student authenticity and independent decision-making, no matter where their hearts take them with music. Teaching students for who they are through facilitation and encouragement rather than forcefulness connects students’ hearts to music and creates a teacher-student relationship that will last for years to come.
